When I started House of Dhara, every decision was intentional. The wax I chose. The wicks I sourced. The colors I poured. The packaging, every visible and behind the scenes aspect of the business. And yes — the box your candle arrives in.
Packaging is often an afterthought for small businesses. It's easy to grab whatever is cheapest, wrap your product, and ship it off. But for me, it never felt right to put something I'd crafted so carefully — a hand-poured, plant-based, non-toxic candle — inside packaging that would outlive it by hundreds of years in a landfill.
So I made a choice early on: no plastic. Ever.

What "Plastic-Free" Actually Means for Us
It's not just about swapping bubble wrap for paper. Going plastic-free meant rethinking every layer of the packaging process — from the outer box to the inner padding to the eco-friendly paper tape that seals it shut.
All of my packaging is locally produced in Germany, certified biodegradable, and 100% recyclable. That means when your House of Dhara candle arrives at your door, everything around it can go straight into your paper recycling — guilt-free. I use a paper carton box, three different types of paper to protect each candle and some eco-friendly paper filling. You can REUSE them all.
Why It Matters More Than You Think
The candle industry, like many home décor sectors, generates a surprising amount of plastic waste. Shrink wrap, foam inserts, synthetic ribbons, plastic windows on boxes — it adds up. And most of it ends up in landfill.
As a small business, I may not be able to change the whole industry. But I can control what leaves my little home studio in Frankfurt. And I believe that every conscious choice — however small — adds up.
The Architect in Me Sees It Differently
My background is in architecture. In design, there's a principle that form and function should work together — that nothing should exist without purpose. Plastic packaging, to me, is a design failure. It serves a moment and then creates a problem that lasts forever. It is a problem we created and don’t know how to solve.
Paper, on the other hand, is honest. It does its job — protecting your candle on its journey — and then it gracefully exits. That's good design.
What You Can Do With Our Packaging
- Recycle it — all of it, without sorting out plastic components
- Reuse the box — it makes a beautiful little gift box or storage for small items
- Compost the paper padding — it will break down naturally
A Small Business With a Big Responsibility
We are a small studio. I pour our candles by hand, in small batches, right here in Frankfurt. But being small doesn't mean my responsibility to the planet is small.
Every candle I make is a reflection of our values — plant-based wax, local materials, non-toxic dyes, untreated cotton wicks. The packaging is simply the final expression of that same care.
When you buy from House of Dhara, you're not just bringing a beautiful object into your home. You're supporting a way of making things that I believe the world needs more of — slow, intentional, and kind to the earth.
